Entering the Circle: Introduction to Tribal Bellydance
Saturday/Sunday June 15/16, 1-4pm
Birch St Studio (previously Jillian’s Studio), Crestone
An introductory workshop for participants of all levels,
including those with no dance background.
This is an invitation to enter the circle of American Tribal Style and experience the strength and beauty of dancing in community. We will learn the basic vocabulary and stylistic principles of this powerful belly dance form, the four families of fast steps, and the elements of slow, sinuous movement. We will explore the essential role of formation, cueing and “group mind” in improvisational choreography, and cover fundamentals of music and rhythm for ATS®.
There will be time to practice what we have learned, and to talk about the roots and influences of American Tribal Style.
Using the principles and movements taught and demonstrated in this workshop, we will practice improvisational choreography by deepening our attention to cues and gesture. After learning some basic movement vocabulary, we will develop timing and confidence; initiating movement and taking the lead; developing open eyes and ears and practicing seamless following. We will work on creating graceful transitions between movement families, formations and musical phrasing.
Six hours of instruction over two days, with breaks.
Please wear comfortable clothes for dance; and bring water and snacks.
$ 45 pre-registration / $ 60 day of workshop / $ 50 dancers under 18
