Colleena Shakti is an internationally-known performing artist and an exceptionally gifted dancer and teacher. She has lived in India for more than a decade, where she founded and directs the Shakti School of Dance. Drawing from her in-depth study of Indian artistic tradition, classical Odissi and Kathak, Rajasthani folk and tribal dance forms, her strong background in bellydance and the rigor of her practice as a dedicated dancer, teacher and performer, Colleena will offer a rich curriculum including:
- aesthetic foundation of Indian mood and expression
- exploration of posture, body lines and embodied geometry
- drilling exercises for conditioning and training in Indian fusion
- developing a common vocabulary of Indian fusion movements
- understanding mudra, gaze and embellishment
- introduction to Kathak fundamentals as a basis for daily practice
- gaining competency in turns, spins and traveling steps
- creation of choreographic phrases
- refining rhythm and music sense
- breath awareness in dance
- principles of ethical fusion for Indian dance forms
- writing, reflection and self-assessment assignments
- Krishna Janmasthami classical dance performance & celebration
- Special Odissi Intensive that can be taken as a one-day workshop
